Germany (HQ: Berlin, Germany) / Mastodon gGmbH (transitioning to Belgian AISBL nonprofit)
Mastodon is developed by a German nonprofit and operates under EU privacy laws. The software includes tools for data export, account deletion, and consent management. Each server sets its own privacy policy, but the default configuration follows GDPR principles. The European Commission and European Data Protection Supervisor run their own Mastodon instances. Keep in mind that GDPR compliance depends on your chosen server. Servers based in the EU must follow GDPR, but servers outside the EU may not offer the same protections.
